Bagpipe Variations was written to be included in a set of piano solos infused with popular music elements. In the midst of a composition program in Paris, surrounded by and composing serious works, Bagpipe Variations was a quirky, light-hearted break from other music. I chose to juxtapose two styles that clearly belong together: irish folk song and blues. (Right?) The two elements rub shoulders for a while before fusing into celtic-folk-blues.
