Premiere: Thomas Childs, piano. Michigan State University, 2011.
Instrumentation: solo piano
Program Notes: The Latin Tinge is part of a long-term project writing short piano pieces influenced by various contemporary styles and incorporating improvisation. This piece was inspired by salsa and Cuban music and involves an open section of improv.
The title is a reference to Jelly Roll Morton’s “Spanish Tinge,” which is how he described his pieces containing habanera rhythms or Afro-Caribbean influences.
