It’s been a busy spring! I had the opportunity, in conjunction with my colleague Cynthia Van Maanen, to co-compose a piece for the online PBS show Songs About Buildings and Moods for their upcoming third season which will drop sometime early spring 2026. The piece is called transformational landscape.
The show features unique and interesting architecture in combination with newly-composed classical music. Our episode features a building from the Grand Traverse Commons known as Building 50, part of a massive renovation of a former mental hospital. The piece is for flute, viola, cello, and percussion and featured both alumni and students from the institution where we teach (Interlochen Center for the Arts). We also have a faculty colleague who choreographed and danced for the piece (a first for the show).
transformational landscape premiered at Kirkbride Hall (in Building 50) on May 10th to a full house along with a conversation with the show producer and the composers. We are excited to share that two members of the group commissioned a string quartet version for their ensemble Viridian Strings that will premiere at The Alluvion on August 28, 2025.
Print versions of the music will be available shortly!
